What is speech and language therapy?

Speech and language therapy is treating and diagnosing both adults and children who have difficulties with communication, eating, drinking or swallowing. These difficulties can be a result of disorder, medical disorder, injury or can be a feature of developmental delay in children.

Who do speech and language therapists treat at Manchester SLT?

At Manchester SLT, all of our highly qualified and specialist speech and language therapists offer services to adults and children and will take into account any specialist requirements you may have. For example wheelchair access or a ground floor clinic appointment. At Manchester SLT we take a client centred approach, which means we work with you to achieve your goals, we are flexible and approachable so if you have any concerns please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. One of our friendly team members will be ready to help.

Do I need to be referred to Manchester SLT?

Manchester SLT are a private speech and language therapy team, therefore you will not need a medical referral from your GP. We offer a self referral system, so if you feel speech and language therapy would be beneficial for you or a member of your family, please do not hesitate in contacting us. We will be happy to discuss the best option for you or your family member. Manchester SLT receive speech and language therapy referrals from insurance companies, therefore if you need any help or advice on any referral issues please call us and we will be happy to discuss your options and the best route to take in terms of referral.

Our Speech and Language therapy team at Manchester SLT may feel it is necessary to refer you or a member of your family on to another member of our multidisciplinary team. This could be a physiotherapist, OT or GP. If this is the case, the speech and language therapist will discuss this with you before hand to ensure you are happy to go ahead and give consent.

Will the difficulty go away without therapy?

Communication, eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties are complex and will depend on the individual as to how severe symptoms are. With this in mind, difficulties may need more or less treatment depending upon the severity. Our speech and language therapists at Manchester SLT will be happy to discuss this with you before you commence your treatment.

What causes speech and language difficulties?

Speech and language difficulties can be caused by many different things. Some of the common causes are below:

What can I expect from my initial assessment at Manchester SLT?

The initial assessment at Manchester SLT will last for 90 minutes and will include; a thorough case history, main reasons for therapy intervention, any medical issues or concerns, assessment of communication skills and future therapy goals and recommendations for treatment. If there is anything you are unsure of, our speech and language therapists will be more than happy to clarify or discuss in more detail.

Where will the speech and language therapy take place?

At Manchester SLT we have clinics in Central Manchester, Sale, Macclesfield and Liverpool. Manchester SLT also offers a home visit service as well as school and nursing home visits. Please speak to one of our friendly staff members to discuss the best options for you at the time of booking.

How long will my appointment be?

A speech and language therapist assessment at Manchester SLT will last for 90 minutes and will include assessment and goal setting for future therapy if needed. If you require further treatment, these sessions will last 60 minutes and will usually occur in a block of 6-8. However, the speech and language therapist will discuss this with you at the initial assessment meeting and will make suggestions as to how many sessions and may differ slightly from the above information. If you would like specific information on appointments please contact one of our friendly receptionists who will be happy to go over pricing costs for each different appointment type in relation to yourself.

How much speech and language therapy will I need?

The number of speech and language sessions needed for each individual will differ depending upon the need and difficulty of each person. However, the speech and language therapist will discuss this with you in the initial assessment and co-ordinate the number of sessions with speech and language therapy goals. If she feels you need more or less sessions, this will always be discussed with you first.

How much will speech and language therapy cost at Manchester SLT?

  • Home visits All home visit appointments will be calculated per individual as it will depend upon specific mileage. Please contact us to get a quote for a home visit appointment.

Can I cancel my appointment if I can no longer make it, and will I be charged if so?

At Manchester SLT we understand sometimes appointments need to be cancelled as we are all busy people! However we do operate a 24 hour cancellation policy, therefore all we ask is that if you need to cancel an appointment, you do so by giving us at least 24 hours notice. If not, you will be charged for the appointment regardless, even if you do not turn up.
