Medico-legal reports

Medico-legal speech and language therapy reports can be provided by our speech and language therapists at Manchester SLT. Our medico-legal speech and language therapy reports are a specialised service and can be done for any area of speech, language, communication and eating and drinking difficulties. Speech and language therapy medico-legal reports can be written for both children and adults and are written by our specialist team to meet the specific needs and requirements of the client and report.

Why would an individual need a speech and language therapy medico-legal report?

There are many different reasons why a speech and language therapy medico-legal report would need to be done. A summary of some of the most common reasons are below:

  • Assessment needed to understand if a speech, language or communication problem is in existence or not.
  • Medical negligence - A medical complication occurring at birth or head injuries which have affected an individual's development of speech and communication. If this is the case, our speech and language therapists will cost the price when claiming for compensation.
  • Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal (SENDIST) - A SENDIST means a child or young adult's communication is affecting their accessibility to education. Therefore specialist support is being applied for.

What will a speech and language therapy medico-legal report involve?

A speech and language therapy medico-legal report will involve the following:

  • A detailed speech and language therapy assessment to determine if an individual has a speech, language, communication or eating and drinking difficulty, and to understand how severe their difficulty is.
  • A review of the individual's medical notes and other relevant documentation.
  • Information on the individual's past, present and future communication, eating and drinking ability.
  • A comprehensive and detailed report on the individual's speech and language therapy assessment results, their diagnosis and also the prognosis of the individual's difficulty.
  • Recommendations for further speech and language therapy treatment, and the cost of this treatment.
  • The individual's potential for improvement.
  • Whether any specialist equipment is required or recommended e.g. communication aids.
  • Capital and annual costs of specialist equipment.

How much does a speech and language medico-legal report cost?
